Custom Tap FAQ

Minimum order, lead time, what to send, thread types, tool materials and more — the questions buyers ask before ordering a custom tap.

What does SUPERTAP do?

SUPERTAP (Dongguan SuperTap Hardware Technology Co., Ltd.) is a custom tap manufacturer in Dongguan, China. We design and make non-standard and special taps to the customer’s drawing, sample or thread specification — including forming taps, trapezoidal and ACME taps, buttress taps, round-thread taps, anti-loosening taps, combination drill-taps and orthopaedic bone taps.

What is the minimum order quantity for custom taps?

There is no fixed minimum. About half of our orders are for 5 pieces or fewer, and small sample orders are welcome. The unit price is higher for very small quantities; the quote shows it clearly.

How long does a custom tap take?

We return a design drawing and quotation within 24 hours of receiving your drawing or sample, and the fastest delivery is 5 days after approval. Actual lead time depends on size, material, coating and quantity and is stated in the quote.

What information do you need for a quote?

Thread specification (major diameter, pitch, profile or standard), tolerance or pitch-diameter requirement, workpiece material and hardness, through or blind hole, thread depth, machine and coolant, and quantity. A drawing, sample or photo helps most.

Can you make a tap from a sample or a photo?

Yes. Send us the sample to measure, or clear photos with the measured major diameter and pitch. We send you a drawing to approve before production.

Which thread types can you make?

Metric (M, MF), unified (UNC, UNF, UNEF), Whitworth (BSW), pipe threads (G, R/Rc, NPT), trapezoidal (Tr), ACME, buttress, round (Rd), square and multi-start threads, plus any non-standard form to drawing, right- or left-hand.

Which tool materials and coatings do you use?

HSS, cobalt HSS (e.g. M42), powder-metallurgy HSS (PM-HSS) and solid carbide; coatings include TiN, TiCN and TiAlN, plus oxide and nitride treatments. We recommend the combination for your workpiece and process.

Can you supply matching thread gauges?

Yes. Custom taps can be supplied with matching thread plug gauges (GO / NO-GO) for incoming inspection and in-process checks.

Do you work with overseas customers?

Yes. We communicate in English, work from metric or inch drawings and ship worldwide by international express.

Where is SUPERTAP located?

Our office is at Room 329, No. 11 Sanyuan Road, Nancheng District, Dongguan, Guangdong, China, and our factory is in Xinmalian Industrial Zone, Dalang Town, Dongguan.

Questions by product

Custom Forming Taps

What is the difference between a forming tap and a cutting tap?

A cutting tap removes material and produces chips. A forming tap displaces material plastically, so there are no chips and the thread is smoother and stronger. Forming taps need a ductile workpiece material and a larger pre-drilled hole than cutting taps — we calculate the correct hole size for your material.

Can you make oversize forming taps?

Yes. Oversize or undersize pitch diameters are common before plating or coating, or to fit special screws. Give us the thread size and the target pitch diameter or tolerance class.

Custom Buttress Taps

What do you need to quote a custom buttress tap?

Major diameter, pitch, both flank angles (load and clearance flank), crest and root dimensions or the applicable standard, hand of thread, thread depth and workpiece material. A drawing or a sample part is fastest.

Custom Trapezoidal & ACME Taps

Can multi-start trapezoidal nuts be tapped?

Yes. A multi-start tap is designed for the lead and the number of starts and cuts all starts in one pass; for long leads we usually supply a roughing and a finishing tap. Send pitch, number of starts (or lead), major diameter and nut length.

Are Tr and ACME threads interchangeable?

No. Tr is a metric 30° form and ACME is an inch 29° form with different pitches and tolerances. Tell us the standard, or send a screw sample and we will draw it from the part.

Custom Round-Thread Taps

Are DIN 405 round-thread taps available from stock?

Some common sizes are, but large diameters, non-standard pitches and special radii usually have to be made to order. Send the size or a sample and we will return a design drawing within 24 hours.

Custom Anti-Loosening Taps

Do self-locking threads need special bolts?

No. The wedge-ramp internal thread works with standard external threads. Only the pre-drilled hole and tapping parameters differ from a normal thread, and we provide recommendations for both.

Custom Special Thread-Form Taps

Can you make a tap from a sample without a drawing?

Yes. Send us the sample (the external-thread part or the nut), or clear photos with the measured major diameter and pitch. We measure it, send a drawing for your approval, then produce.

Custom Pilot, Step & Deep-Hole Taps

Why do my taps break in deep holes?

Usually poor chip evacuation and excessive torque. We choose the flute type (spiral flute, spiral point or forming), the extension and coolant-through for your hole depth, material and machine, and split the job into roughing and finishing taps when needed.

Custom Combination Drill-Taps

When does a combination drill-tap make sense?

For high-volume parts where the same position is drilled and tapped, especially on automated lines and multi-station machines. For small batches or hard materials, a separate drill and tap may give better tool life and cost; we evaluate it with you.

Custom Orthopaedic Taps & Drills

Can you make small sample batches of bone taps?

Yes. We make a small batch to your drawing first; volume production starts after you approve the dimensions and performance.

Custom Spiral-Point, Spiral-Flute & Pipe Taps

Spiral-point or spiral-flute tap — which one do I need?

Use a spiral-point tap for through holes: it pushes chips ahead and out of the hole. Use a spiral-flute tap for blind holes: chips travel up the helix and out. Very soft or gummy materials also need an adjusted helix and rake angle — just tell us the workpiece material.
